ʻAwa, Hula, & Hoʻokipa at Merrie Monarch

Join us for Mālama I Ke Kumu at the heart of the Merrie Monarch Festival — an experience dedicated to nurturing the roots of Hawaiian culture through the sharing of ʻawa and hula.

In partnership with Kanaka Kava, we invite you to gather, sip ʻawa, and connect in the spirit of aloha and ʻike (knowledge). This space is designed for education, conversation, and cultural exchange. Learn about the traditions behind ʻawa preparation, its significance in protocol and gathering, and the deep connection between hula, ʻāina, and community.

Throughout the day, kumu hula and practitioners will share manaʻo (insights) on hula’s role in preserving and perpetuating Hawaiian values, and offer oli and hula presentations rooted in honoring the land and its stories.
