ʻAwa, Hula, & Hoʻokipa at Merrie Monarch

Join us for Mālama I Ke Kumu at the heart of the Merrie Monarch Festival — an experience dedicated to nurturing the roots of Hawaiian culture through the sharing of ʻawa and hula.

In partnership with Kanaka Kava, we invite you to gather, sip ʻawa, and connect in the spirit of aloha and ʻike (knowledge). This space is designed for education, conversation, and cultural exchange. Learn about the traditions behind ʻawa preparation, its significance in protocol and gathering, and the deep connection between hula, ʻāina, and community.

Throughout the day, kumu hula and practitioners will share manaʻo (insights) on hula’s role in preserving and perpetuating Hawaiian values, and offer oli and hula presentations rooted in honoring the land and its stories.

Hoʻoulu ʻAwa: Harvest & Learn at Kaukamōlī

In the spirit of mālama ʻāina and community learning, Mālama I Ka ʻAwa welcomed ʻohana, practitioners, and curious learners to our home farm at Kaukamōlī for a hands-on ʻAwa Harvest & Education Day. Participants gathered to learn about the traditional and responsible methods of harvesting heirloom Hawaiian ʻawa, understanding its life cycle from soil to ceremony.

The day began with an opening protocol to honor the ʻāina and the plant itself, followed by a guided walk through the ʻawa patches where we discussed varietal identification, cultivation techniques, and the cultural significance of each plant. Attendees participated in harvesting mature ʻawa roots using traditional tools and practices, learning the importance of ethical gathering and stewardship.

The event closed with a shared ʻaha ʻawa, deepening the pilina (relationship) between people, ʻāina, and plant. Together, we reaffirmed our commitment to perpetuating the knowledge and practices surrounding ʻawa cultivation for future generations.
