Kahua ʻAwa: Learning from the Land

Kahua ʻAwa: Learning from the Land is a community-centered educational program that offers hands-on training in ʻawa cultivation and harvesting, directly on local Hawaiian ʻawa farms. This project creates space for learners to work alongside mahi ʻawa (ʻawa farmers) and cultural practitioners, gaining firsthand knowledge of heirloom ʻawa varieties, propagation techniques, and the traditional ethics of harvesting. Rooted in the values of mālama ʻāina and kuleana, Kahua ʻAwa fosters a deep understanding of how ʻawa farming connects to Hawaiian identity, land stewardship, and cultural continuity — ensuring this sacred plant remains protected and perpetuated in its rightful home.
